【讲座简介】

We examine whether banks price a borrower’s political ideology, which is proxied by the monetary contribution of a firm’s top managers to Democratic or Republican Party. We find that firms with a Republican ideology have lower loan spreads, larger loans, fewer covenants and lower likelihood of collateral. We also find that the larger the difference of the political ideology between the lender and the borrower, the more unfavorable the bank loan contracting terms are. The relationship between political ideology and bank loan contracting is attenuated if a firm has weak corporate governance, indicating corporate governance complements managerial political ideology.

Jian Zhou is Professor of Accounting at University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he holds the Lloyd Fujie/Deloitte Foundation Distinguished Professorship. Jian Zhou’s current research focuses on auditing and financial accounting. He has published in many journals such as Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory and Accounting Horizons. His research has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, SmartMoney and has been referenced in Financial Accounting Theory and in leading journals in accounting, finance, marketing and law. Zhou’s research has been cited by a SEC study and in a joint letter to the US Congress from The Center for Audit Quality, the Council for Institutional Investors, and CFA Institute. His research has been cited more than 2400 times according to Google Scholar and has been downloaded more than 37,000 times on Social Science Research Network (SSRN). He was listed among the top SSRN authors in 2002. Zhou has won many research grants such as the PricewaterhouseCoopers INQuires Grant (2007, 2008, 2011). Zhou has presented papers at AAA FARS mid-year meeting, ISAR Symposium, Conference on Financial Economics and Accounting, and CRSP Forum at University of Chicago. Zhou currently sits on the Editorial Board of Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory and won the 2014 Award for Outstanding Service to this journal. Zhou also won the 2016 Award for Outstanding Service to the American Accounting Association Auditing Section.
